President Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed the promotion of Justices Ejembi Eko and Amina Augie to the Supreme Court bench.
Acting Director, Information, Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC), Mr. Soji Oye made this disclosure in a statement he made available to media on Friday, adding that the appointment followed NJC’s earlier recommendation of the two candidates to President Buhari.
Oye stated that the two Justices who were formerly of the Court of Appeal will be sworn in on Monday by Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mahmud Mohammed who will retire on November 10.
With the appointment, by the time the CJN retires, the number of the justices of the apex court will be 15.
“The two honourable justices will be sworn-in by the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council, Hon. Justice Mahmud Mohammed, GCON, on Monday 7th November, 2016 at 2.00 pm in the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” the statement reads.
This is coming barely 24 hours after NJC suspended seven judges accused of corruption, among whom were two Supreme Court justices.
